Proposal

I'm quite happy with my first shoot.  Especially the photos with my brother in my dads situation and dad in my brothers situation. I think they worked really well as you could definatly see how much they are out of place. I need to work on making the difference between my mum and I more obvious though, as in some of the photos it was quite hard to notice that we were out of place.

For my next shoot I want to include my grandparents too so I will mainly concentrate of capturing them in a teenagers position.  I wasn't origionally going to use the household for all more photos but after this shoot I think this setting works really well.  It is the one place that relates to all three generations.  Therefore I will continue to use this setting.

Exercise 2 - Same setting captured at two different times

To continue with the setting of my concept (the home) I took my two photos showing a change in time in my backyard.  Here is my backyard a few hours after it snowed at night.

And here is my backyard again, the morning after it snowed.

Exercise 1 - Fast and slow shutter speed

To make this exercise relate to my project I decided to do it photographing people.  Here using a fast shutter speed I captured my brother leaping into the air, making him look completely still.

With a slow shutter speed I captured him sprinting past the camera.  The blurred effect makes him look like he's  moving really fast.

Favourites from shoot 1

In this photo I dressed my dad (the generation of "adults") in teenage clothes, playing the guitar.  I think this really captures that teenage feel to it as the background shows a typical teenage boys messy room, with a poster of a half naked girl on the wall.  The colours of the surroundings and clothes are bright and the clothes are what you would call kind of "gangster", which is not at all how an adult would dress or act.

This photo also has the bright colours, ganster look, slouched position, and shows him glued to the xbox which is how a lot of teenage boys are.  The only objects in the picture are the guitar, xbox controller and phone which are all objects which you would associate with teenagers.

The typical  man isn't usually into cooking but when it comes to a barbecue, this seems to be his thing.  With a beer on a nice sunny day I wanted to capture a teenager in his situation.  The problem I have with this photo is that I've unintentionally cropped off his feet.

One of my dads favourite things to do seems to be sitting in front of the TV with a beer, watching the rugby or soccer.  He often jumps up cheering when a goal is about to be scored.  This seems to be typical for his generation so I tried to capture a teenager doing this.  He's dressed in darker colours with his t-shirt tucked in and slippers, which is how I see the average adult of his age dressed.  The only thing is, you can't see his face which means it isn't obvious that its a teenager.

In this photo I placed a female adult in the situation of a teenage girl.  Before going out on the town a typical girl is dressed in a short dress, heels and spends a while in front of the mirror putting on make-up.  In one of Jim Goldbergs photos he captured a girl in front of a mirror, with her reflection.  I used this as a precedent for this photo.

Facebooking/sitting on the computer is also a typical activity of a teenager.  In this photo I captured an adult wearing young girls slippers, a short dress, with bright surroundings.  I think this photo looks too posed though.  When I'm sitting at my laptop I'm usually slumped on my couch not sitting up right.  The above posture is more adult-like

As apposed to the above photo of the teenage boy at the barbecue, a female adult is usually associated with the kitchen and cooking.  Here I've captured a teenage girl pooring a coffee, wearing an apron and surrounded by a clean modern kitchen.

This photo is of a teenager, acting as a business woman.  She's dressed in dark, business like clothes, carrying a briefcase and getting into a reasonably posh car.  You wouldn't often see a teenager doing this so I think this really captures what I wanted.

Shoot 1

In first shoot I just worked with the two generations, teenagers and adults.  This was just a bit of a test shoot to see whether my concept would work.  Next shoot I will then include the elderly.

Artist Models

I looked at photographers on the Magnum photos website.  I was looking for the difference in the way they photograph teenagers, adults and the elderly.

Teenagers
The below photos of teenagers are taken of them doing everyday things that teenagers would do (lying on the couch, putting on make up etc.).  These photos show typical teenagers.  You can tell this from the way they dress, revealing and bright clothes, and from their surroundings.

Adults
Compared to the photos of teenagers, the clothing and surroundings are more sophisticated and business-like showing the adults as they are.  Especially the men who wear suits.

I also really like how Bruce Gilden walks up and down the street and captures people in the moment with no posing.  I won't be able to do quite the same thing as the people I'm photographing will just be acting.  But I will still capture them in the moment of their activities.

Elderly  Most of the photos of the elderly I found were in black and white, which gives the impression they are old photos.  The way they're dressed compared to teenagers and adults is even more sophisticated, with less colour.  The shirts and ties give that old fashioned look.  The surroundings also give the impression of old.  The building in Hartmann's photo is run down and old, and in Marlows photo everything is spotless and tidy, which is how old people usually are.

All these photographs are taken in the moment, there is no posing for the camera.  Which is exactly how I want to capture the people in my photos.

Project 2: Time Proposal

For this project I really wanted to capture people rather than just focusing on spaces or objects.  I thought about how people change over time and came up with the idea of capturing how peoples hobbies, dress sense, living styles and everyday events change as you grow older and through the generations.  I want to focus on three generations: teenagers, adults in their 40s and the elderly in their 80s.

Although, a problem with this idea is that it could become rather boring therefore I want to put a little twist on my series of photos.  Instead of photographing each of the three generations in their normal places, I will switch it round and capture them in their opposite places, wearing the opposite clothes to what they normally wear.  I will do this to show that as you grow older you have no choice but to change.  Your priorities, hobbies, dress sense and taste changes.  If it didn't it just wouldn't be right.

I haven't completely decided on the setting I will use though as I want the setting to be consistant, therefore I have to think of a place whcih relates to all three generations.  Instead I could also choose a specific time and day and think about what each generation would be doing at that moment.  If I did a week day a teenager would be at school/university, an adult would be at work, a grandparent would be at home/at church or a Saturday night where a teenager would be partying, adult be watching the rugby or at the movies and the elderly at home.

I will use my first shoot as a practice shoot, just around the home, switching the positions of teenagers and adults, to see whether my idea works how I want it to.
